Moisturizers, shampoos, deodorants, hand creams or moisturizing masks… The Cien brand, marketed by Lidl, is highly appreciated by consumers. It must be said that practice very attractive prices, in a context of inflation where budgets for purchases deemed non-essential are reduced. But are these extremely competitive prices associated with a formulation that is safe for health? For 17 references (out of 510 tested), it would seem not. Products containing endocrine disruptors and very potent allergens
Classified by UFC-Que Choisir in alphabetical order from letter A to letter D according to their level of health risk, the products were analyzed with a fine-toothed comb. The letter A corresponds to a very low, or even non-existent, level of risk. The letter D, therefore the worst, means that a significant health risk has been detected in the cosmetic formula. Obviously, the level of risk was assessed for each age group, including infants and pregnant women.
Among the risky ingredients present in the formulas, there is the butylphenyl methylpropional, an allergen known to have some level of reproductive toxicity. A product whose use was banned in cosmetics in 2022…
Propylparaben, a long chain paraben regarded as a endocrine disruptor, it has also been found in some Cien products. Its lipophilic nature is absorbed by the fat cells of the human body (in particular the mammary cells (highly lipophilic) and then assimilated. It is not the only endocrine disruptor present in the formulas. Ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate and phenoxyethanol (their name surely tells you something) are also present.
Two very potent allergens were also detected. We are talking about methylchloroisothiazolinone and methylisothiazolinone. So be careful if you have fragile and/or reactive skin.
Do you own any of the products listed above? UFC-Que Choisir strongly advises you to be especially vigilant.
How to avoid buying cosmetics with dubious formulas?
First of all, you must know that the price of a cosmetic is not a guarantee of the quality of its formula. Some luxury brands, for example, still have beauty products whose ingredient list could drive many scientists crazy.
This is why we must constantly keep an eye out, scan the ingredients list of every beauty product we are about to use or buy.
But that is not all! While some EDs are well known to the general public, sometimes other problematic ingredients are hidden under names that are hard to spot when you’re not a pro. What to do in this case? The best thing to do is learn, on a daily basis, the substances to avoid, a do a little research on the internet if in doubtor download an application that can read the INCI lists of each product.
Either way, keep an eye out!
