LGBT violence is on a “worrying increase”, according to SOS Homophobia

The association has released its annual report on the eve of the international day against homophobia, transphobia and biphobia. And in 2022, violence against LBGQI+ people persists overall, while transphobia in particular increases.

Ten years after marriage for all, LGBTphobic violence has not decreased. On the contrary, homophobic, transphobic and biphobic physical attacks against LGBTQI+ people are on the rise, according to SOS Homophobia’s annual report released on Tuesday 16 May. “worrisome increase”.

Homophobic acts that persist

In 2022, the association identified 184 cases, viz physical assault every other day, a 28% increase from 2021. “Despite recent advances in the law and also an evolution of mentalities, we see the persistence of homophobic and transphobic acts, which are expressed in a violent way”, warns the report. In 2022, the association collected a total of 1,506 testimonials. The victims of LBGTphobia are mainly men and in 38% of cases their attacks take place in public places (38% of cases). Most of the interviewees stated that they were victims of blows and wounds, but also of spitting or throwing objects. In half of the cases, these attacks are the work of men, alone or in groups..

Transphobia on the rise
