Childbirth with or without an epidural is rarely painless, as you might imagine. But do you know the comb technique to reduce the pain of contractions?

A simple everyday object could work almost wonders during the labor stage, at the beginning of the delivery. But what is this story?

Use a comb to ease the pain of contractions

Whether you want to deliver with or without an epidural, the pain of contractions is unlikely to spare you. That’s right, it’s part of the game, but it seems that squeezing a comb very tightly in your hand during contractions would greatly reduce the pain. Élise, a nice midwife you may know on Instagram, and also the author of the book My serene and delicious pregnancy share this simple tip:

As he explains in the post above, hold a comb firmly, the bristles pointing in the hand, it would ease the contractions. How is it possible ?

Our brain can’t focus on two pains at the same time, so by creating another pain, it will focus on the pain caused by the comb and not the contractions. We tricked it and it works!

However, Elise specifies that even squeezing the comb very tightly is not magic:

We agree that an epidural isn’t worth it, but it can help manage contractions until peri is installed and the job is frankly underway.


For women who wish to give birth without an epidural, combing can be very helpful in managing pain. Let’s distract the brain. ⁣
