EXCLUSIVE – Revealed: 38-year-old Brit accused of stabbing father in Tenerife ‘suffered from schizophrenia’ and ‘isn’t a bad person,’ family source says

This is a British holidaymaker accused of stabbing his own father to death in a frenzy in Tenerife after a row over cleaning.

Disturbed Paul Corcoran is accused of murdering his father, former Merchant Marine hero Simon Corcocan, 58, who was stabbed dozens of times after joining him on the resort island.

The Briton (38) has been in a special prison on the Spanish Canary Island since his arrest for the heinous crime in July 2020. He is still awaiting clarification of his criminal case.

Corcoran was visiting his ex-father, 58, during the first international Covid lockdown when the fatal attack took place – shortly after they fell out over his failure to clean.

The father of four was brutally stabbed to death at his home in Los Abrigos, a small port on Tenerife’s south coast in the Granadilla de Abona region.

An autopsy found the victim had been stabbed about 35 times, with many of the wounds inflicted from behind.

So far, the suspect, who is believed to be a former soldier, has only been officially referred to by his initials as PCS. But MailOnline discovered his full identity – and the family tragedy behind the case.

Corcoran Jr. lived with his mother, also ex-British and separated from her husband, at their house in the south of Spain.

A family source exclusively told MailOnline that Corcoran suffers from “acute schizophrenia”.

He was previously pictured in his first court appearance almost three years ago, led away wearing bandages on his left hand.

A spokesman for the Guardia Civil, which investigated the death two summers ago, said: “I can confirm that a British man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his father, who is also British.”

The alarm would have gone off after the suspect went to his girlfriend’s apartment for coffee with blood on his hands.

His father’s body was found at a nearby property.

The victim worked as an arborist and garden specialist and was in regular contact with his daughter and son, who live in the Midlands.

Unfortunately, his third son died almost seven years ago.

Police said they could not comment on local reports that the suspect has mental health issues.

But a family source said: “Paul suffers from acute schizophrenia and visited his father during the first Covid lockdown.

“He is not a monster. People think he is for what he says he did, but he is sick and the system failed him.

“He did not receive his medication. He needs help, he’s not bad.

“He had a psychotic episode and didn’t know what he was doing.

“The tragic sequence of events left the family devastated and torn apart.”

Relatives in the UK first learned of the horror by reading about it on news websites.

A source said: “Simon and his daughter Lauren were very close and she was devastated when she first heard he had passed away. She assumed it was a heart attack or a natural cause.

“Paul’s case has been pushed back and forth and it is now getting worse and worse in custody.

“The family have spent a fortune on legal fees for Spanish lawyers and want the case to be settled as quickly as possible. It’s dragging on.’
