Abortion: North Dakota bans abortion ‘from conception’

After Florida, which has just reduced the legal deadline for resorting to abortion from 15 to 6 weeks, it’s up to North Dakota to attack this fundamental right: on April 24, the conservative state signed a law that almost totally prohibits abortion.

In the United States, the list of anti-abortion restrictions is growing rapidly. Now it is North Dakota, in the hands of the Republicans, which has just signed a law banning abortion on April 24″ from the drawing It thus joins the fifteen states that have implemented hostile measures in the matter since last June’s repeal of Roe v. Wade by the Supreme Court.

A law that targets doctors

The law provides for some limited exceptions. If the pregnancy presents a real danger to the mother’s health, or if it is the result of rape or incest, an abortion may be authorized. I have yet to be able to do that show in the eyes of the law that this is the case and find a doctor willing to do it: in Florida, a mother who nevertheless met the criteria was, for example, refused an abortion by the medical profession, which played on the ambiguity of the law. Did they fear potential repercussions or were they using legal vagueness for ideological reasons?

Be that as it may, the new North Dakota law directly targets doctors: those who agree to resort to an abortion outside the established framework will face sentences of up to five years in prison. In this context, healthcare professionals are likely to be even more reluctant to help their patients.
