EXCLUSIVE: Prime Video has been quietly ramping up its Scandinavian originals and has now found its first documentary.
We can reveal that the streamer has ordered the Nordic arm Take the chancewhich launches worldwide on May 19. You can watch a trailer for the show under.
The Doctor has a “unique, unfiltered” account of Gert van der Graaf, a notorious stalker who reveals how a childhood crush on ABBA superstar Agnetha Fältskog turned into an obsession that shaped the rest of his life. Experts, psychologists, friends and van der Graaf himself investigate how compulsive fandom can become a criminal obsession.
The 95-minute doc is from Kreativ Inc., Sweden’s A Rabbit Hole and American producer Bunim-Murray Productions, which is owned by Banjiay Americas. Maria Thulin is the director and Banijay Rights has the international distribution rights outside of Europe.
The EPs come from Swedish-born former Zodiak USA CEO Joel Karlsberg, who served as executive producer of Lifetime’s hit crime documentary series. Survive R. Kelly through its Creative Inc. imprint, and John Mork, CEO of A Rabbit Hole (Rörelsen, Balkenfallet).
Creative Inc. has a production deal with Bunim-Murray, the non-script producer known for Keeping up with the Kardashians, the real world And Born that way. Bunim-Murray was also part of the Survive R. Kelly Team.
“Obsessed fandom and stalkers can feel far removed from our everyday lives, but for some it is a reality,” says director Thulin. “According to the Swedish National Council for Crime Prevention, hundreds of thousands of Swedish women have been harassed or harassed by stalkers and we think it is important to shed light on this. The documentary gives the public access to a chilling story about stalking.”
Take the chance is the first Prime Video Nordics original since Deadline revealed that Martin Backlund had been promoted to managing director of Amazon’s streaming business in the region. He was previously head of content for the UK and Scandinavia, with Tushar Jindal poached from a film-oriented role to replace him in the UK.
Last year Prime Video Nordics ordered a number of unscripted originals including LOL: The Last Laughs, The Bridge, Pranked, And Good luck people. It was also behind scripted comedies Garnished.
“Our local content list is growing, and with it Take the chance, adds our cross-genre documentary that spans crime, music, mystery and fandom,” said Backlund. “We want to offer our Nordic customers relevant content with local stories and films, and we believe this local story will be of interest to many.”
