The interview that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex gave to Oprah Winfrey in March 2021 caused a stir on both sides of the Atlantic, especially Meghan Markle’s claim that a member of the British royal family speculated about the skin color of their then unborn child.
Now, just three weeks before the coronation of Harry’s father, King Charles, Britain Daily Telegram reports Markle wrote to her father-in-law after the interview expressed her concern about unconscious bias within the family and identified the person who made the comments about her child’s skin color.
The newspaper also cites a source who says Markle wrote in her letter that she never intended to specifically accuse an individual of racism, but was concerned about unconscious bias.
The king, then Prince of Wales, responded, expressing disappointment at the division within his family and that their allegations had been made so public.
The paper reports that both King and Markle agreed that the comment was “an innocent comment,” but the source says so telegraph that she did not receive what she felt was a satisfactory response to her concerns, which was a factor in her decision not to attend the May 6 coronation.
Instead, Prince Harry will only attend his father’s coronation service and is expected to fly home immediately afterwards without attending any other public events.
