Brit is accused of stabbing a pedestrian during a “road rage attack” at a Spanish crossroads after the victim told the driver to slow down.

A Briton has been charged with stabbing a Spanish pedestrian in a road accident on the Costa del Sol.

Prosecutors want Lewis Harry Briggs to be jailed for more than 16 years if convicted, it was revealed today.

The 23-year-old was extradited from the UK to face trial in Spain after he was arrested on the outskirts of Leeds in December 2020 following a five-week manhunt.

He is accused of stabbing teenager Ulrich Perez in the heart on November 18, 2020 at a pedestrian crossing in an area known as Diana Park between the resort towns of Marbella and Estepona, who Briggs allegedly criticized for speeding.

At the time, the victim was allegedly attacked by a man in a British white Mercedes who he fined for speeding.

In a three-page indictment released today, Briggs is alleged to have stolen the number plates from a garage-parked Audi S8 and attached them to his rented Mercedes hours after the murder.

Regarding the crime that led to Ulrich’s death, it said: “After a fight with the victim, with the intention of ending his life, we allege that the suspect kicked and stabbed him in the chest before fleeing .

“As a result of the brutal aggression, the victim died from an injury sustained from a single stab wound to the chest that penetrated his heart and caused massive external bleeding, according to the autopsy.”

Prosecutors are seeking a 14-year sentence for Briggs, who lived in the Marbella area, if he is found guilty in court of Ulrich’s murder.

They want him to face an additional two years in prison if convicted of fraud involving the use of the stolen license plates, and an additional two months for theft.

And if he is found guilty of the most serious crime, they want him to pay Ulrich’s parents £265,000 each in damages.

He will now appear via video link before a judge in Estepona in a Madrid court, following his surrender to Spanish police

Briggs, 21 at the time of the incident, was identified as a boxer from a wealthy Marbella family at the time of his arrest in Spain.

He is said to have boxed regularly at the MGM gym, which has now closed after being renamed the MTK Marbella gym, but welcomed the likes of Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua and is now associated with Irish crime boss Daniel Kinahan.

Ulrich, a cinema worker victim, was walking from a local supermarket back to the home he shared with his parents and two siblings across the street from the crime scene when he was attacked.

According to local reports, one of the people who came to his aid was his mother.

The youngster’s great-aunt, Herminia Martinez, later said on Facebook: “Sometimes we feel as if God has abandoned us and we ask why the Lord took you or why you, this person who is your son or daughter, wants to be hurt by your. they ask why they did what they did and committed such atrocities.

“I can imagine that we also want to die with our son or daughter because the pain must be so great that we cannot think of anything else. You can’t believe what’s happening. We think it’s a nightmare.

“A crazy man, a stupid man took your life away from you and you are in another dimension with your great grandfather and great grandmother who loved you so much. Rest in peace.’

Local residents started a campaign to help Ulrich’s family with funeral expenses and placed collection bottles in shops near his home after his death.

No date has yet been set for Briggs’ trial, which will take place in a Malaga court.

It was not clear last night how he would take the witness stand or whether his alleged victim’s family had also launched their own private prosecution, which would run parallel but separate from Spanish prosecutors.

A spokesperson for the Spanish National Police confirmed after the extradition of Briggs from the UK in January 2021: “British police have handed over the suspected murderer of a Spaniard who was arrested on 22 December last year.

“Police investigations revealed that the victim was about to cross an intersection when she was almost run over by a vehicle whose driver braked hard.

The driver initially left the scene, but returned moments later and got out of his car, stabbing the pedestrian in the heart without warning and almost immediately taking his own life before driving away.

“Nothing could be done to save the victim’s life and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives identified a suspect and found that he had managed to escape from Spain to England.

A European Arrest Warrant was issued, leading to his arrest in West Yorkshire.

“The national police must now ensure that he is handed over to the Spanish judicial authorities.”

Steve Reynolds, from the National Crime Agency’s international liaison network, said at the time: “This was a horrific crime and we have worked closely with our Spanish partners to track down this suspect in the UK and now have him transported to Spain where he will face trial.

“We are working closely with international partners around the world to track down refugees and ensure there is no safe haven anywhere.”
