Al Jazeera has accused the Israeli government of “brutal murder in violation of international law and norms” after one of its journalists was shot dead in the West Bank this morning.
Shirin Abu Aklekh was killed hours ago in the clash between Israeli security forces and Palestinian militants in the occupied city of Jenin.
He is one of Al Jazeera’s best-known reporters and has covered military raids in the city and a refugee camp.
According to the Qatar News Network, Al Jazeera producer Ali al-Samud was also shot in the back while covering the incident and receiving treatment.
In a statement, Al Jazeera immediately blamed the Israeli government and occupation forces for Abu Akleh’s death.
“In a brutal murder that violated international law and norms, the Israeli occupation forces killed Al Jazeera Palestine correspondent Sirin Abu Aklekh in cold blood, leading to direct confrontation,” the broadcaster said.
“Al Jazeera Media Network condemns this heinous crime that can only prevent the media from doing their job. Al Jazeera blames the Israeli government and occupation forces for Sirin’s murder. “Al Jazeera sends its deepest condolences to the Shirin family in Palestine and her extended family around the world, and we pledge to bring the perpetrators to justice, no matter how hard they try to cover up their crimes and bring them to justice.”
According to the BBC, the Israeli military has denied its forces attacked the journalists and is considering the possibility of a pair of armed Palestinians “shooting” them during the exchange of fire.
According to the BBC, 26 Palestinians and 17 Israelis and two Ukrainians have been killed in clashes in recent weeks.
