One of the most famous works of artist Andy Warhol in 1964 became the most expensive work of art of the XX century. A masterpiece of pop art, Portrait of Marilyn Monroe, Shot Sage Blue Marilyn went under the hammer for $195 million at Christie’s auction. The painting broke multiple records: Leonardo da Vinci’s “Savior of the World”, which sold for $450 million, lost the lead, becoming the second most expensive work in the world.

Portraits of Marilyn Monroe, along with Campbell’s iconic soup cans, have become one of the most recognizable works of pop art king Andy Warhol. Proceeds from the sale of the painting will be donated to the charity foundation to help Thomas and Doris Ammann’s children in Zurich. The portrait of the singer, like many of his other works, was created by Andy Warhol using the silk screen printing technique. Warhol’s most expensive painting previously was Crash of the Silver Car, which sold for $104.5 million at Sotheby’s.
