WNBA star Brittney Griner, who served 10 months in Russia on drug charges, is calling for the release of Wall St. Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was detained there and charged with espionage.
Griner said on Instagram that she was concerned for his safety and urged President Joe Biden to take action.
Gershkovich was arrested by Russian authorities last Thursday and charged with espionage. He is the first American journalist to be arrested by Russia since the Cold War.
Griner was found guilty by a Russian court in 2022 of possession of marijuana oil. She was released after a controversial prisoner swap.
Griner and his wife Cherelle’s Instagram post was published on Saturday.
“Our hearts are filled with deep concern for Evan Gershkovich and his family since Evan’s imprisonment in Russia.” They added, “Every American kidnapped is ours and every American returned is a victory for all of us.”
The Wall Street Journal denied the allegations of espionage. Speaking to the media on Friday, President Biden told Russians, “Let him go.” US officials have not had contact with Gershkovich since his arrest.
