The story of the last months of Saddam Hussein’s life will be told in a feature film by Fremantle and Sinestra.
The prisoner in his palace is one of the first projects to follow from the first look agreement between Fremantle and Sinestra, the latter of which was launched late last year Chernobyl The director Johan Renck and Netflix are coming spaceman Producer Michael Parets.
Based on Will Bardenwerpers The Prisoner in His Palace: Saddam Hussein, His American Guards, and What History Leaves Unspoken The film tells the story of the last months in the life of the former Iraqi dictator, in an account of a dozen American soldiers guarding him.
Woven from various first-hand accounts, the book explores the two very different Husseins who coexist in one person: the rebellious tyrant who uses torture and murder as his tools, and a cunning but considerate prisoner who possesses surprising love and dignity and in the face of the immediate courage shows death.
Parets and Renck are producing, Renck is directing, Darby Kealey is writing and Bardenwerper is on the EP. The book is jointly represented by Zoë Panamenta and Anonymous Content.
“Will Bardenwerper amazed us with his fearless exploration of the paradox of Saddam Hussein,” said Parets. Unflinching at the profound brutality of Saddam’s rule, Will leads us into a harrowing intimacy with the surprisingly real man behind the sceptre.
Sinestra is set to launch in late 2022 and is also producing a TV version by Nathan Newmans How to leave the house with Richard Brown’s Fremantle assisted passenger.
The project is the latest big-budget bid backed by Fremantle. Earlier this month, it was revealed that it was behind a TV series about Carlos Ghosn, starring Tony Shalhoub, which is being filmed with Anonymous Content and Michael Winterbottom.
