Alex Gibbon’s next documentary is directed to Boris Becker in Cannes, where Lorton Entertainment plans to sell it on the Croisette next week.
The project, which is coming to an end, has exclusive behind-the-scenes access to the former Grand Slam champion. Gibney, the Oscar-winning director returns taxi on the dark sideBecker has been running for more than three years, until late last month, when he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison for hiding millions of dollars in assets after filing for bankruptcy in 2017.
The title, produced by John Batsek, explores all aspects of the tennis sensation of winning the Wimbledon championship at just 17. He has won 49 titles in his career, including six Grand Slams and an Olympic gold medal. The project includes a series of personal interviews with Becker, as well as members of his family and tennis stars such as John McEnroe and Bjorn Borg.
Lorton Entertainment, the company behind the Wayne Rooney documentary Rooney It came out on Amazon Prime, sponsors and sells the title.
“This film tells an amazing story of Boris Becker,” said Gibney. “This is both a sincere view of the world of professional tennis and a painful portrait of the man himself. “As Radiar Kipling quotes at the entrance to Wimbledon Central Court, Boris is a person who seems to ‘meet triumph and misfortune and treat both liars equally'”.
Batsek added: “Boris Becker’s story is wonderful. Focused on world attention at just 17, his unique achievements in tennis, both on the court and as a successful manager, deserve the cinematic treatment of world number one Novak Djokovic. His life behind the court trying to manage his personal relationships and growing financial commitments has become the subject of rumors and lies. Boris revealed everything to us with incredible courage. Alex and I have a huge responsibility in making this film.
