Fox News topped March ratings, but all major news networks saw double-digit erosion for the same month in 2022.
CNN saw some of the steepest declines, with a 61 percent primetime audience from March 2022 and a 73 percent drop in the 25-54 demo.
One factor: the lack of a dominant message. The war in Ukraine dominated the news during the same period a year ago, and CNN even saw an increase in viewership.
But the network tried to accommodate the 9pm ET hour by scheduling special town halls and one-on-ones. The network has said its programming is a bit of an experiment that hasn’t received a full promotional boost, while sources say it has been in talks with the likes of Gayle King and Charles Barkley about hosting a weekly show in the lock. The network is also starting a revamp of its daily lineup next month.
While CNN beat MSNBC in the primetime demo 25-54 in the first quarter, it was beaten by the NBCU network in March.
Meanwhile, MSNBC is a bright spot as it launches new shows Inside with Jen Psaki, which airs Sundays at 12pm ET. It averaged 1.06 million viewers in its second week, beating out competition on Fox News and CNN. In the 25-54 demo, it averaged 125,000 viewers, with CNN at 97,000 and Fox News at 140,000.
