BBC and Channel 4 documentary episodes require that 50% of female directors receive their work in the context of the British group We Are Doc Women’s campaign.
We Are Doc Women, BBC Documentaries and Channel 4 Documentaries and Experts said today that the BBC will be contacting more Indians, broadcasters and SvoDs to engage after it’s on record, targeting 2024 with true 50/50 representation. 4’s ongoing affairs team signed the commitment last month.
Teams are now targeting 50% female directors for all their work, a subgenre that traditionally focuses on documentary filmmakers.
Six British manufacturing companies have also signed the commitment, including Louis Theroux’s Mindhouse Productions.
The BBC documentary states that the organization has pioneered its 50/50 commitment to increase women’s representation in its content and will now use this work in documentaries, adding: “BBC commissioners are ready to support brilliant female directors from all over the world”.
We Are Women Doctors An alarming survey of 700 people in October 2021 found that men were three times more likely to refer to doctors in the UK than women, and that only one of 12 directors nominated for the BAFTA TV Craft Awards last month was a woman.
The team had previously written to BAFTA when a similar event occurred in 2020.
