Elon Musk is preparing to scrap outdated verifications on Twitter and has announced a new feature for users who choose to pay for Twitter Blue.
Aside from a blue checkmark confirming that users of the social media platform are paying for the service, Musk tweeted that “starting April 15, only verified accounts will be eligible for For You recommendations.”
Musk added: “[This] is the only realistic way to deal with the takeover of advanced AI bot swarms. Otherwise, it’s a hopeless battle. Voting in polls requires verification for the same reason.
The For You tab is the algorithm-based feed that Twitter delivers to its users, with a mix of content from accounts people follow and recommended tweets. Musk says only tweets from paid subscribers are recommended to other users by the algorithm.
Twitter Blue costs $11 per month for users who sign up on their phone as an in-app purchase. However, the plan is discounted to $7 per month when users sign up on the web.
Starting April 15, only verified accounts will qualify for Vir Jou recommendations.

In Musk’s announcement, he also mentioned that only paying subscribers could take polls. It’s worth noting that in December 2022, Tesla’s CEO conducted a poll asking users whether he should step down from his CEO duties on the social media platform. The results were not in Musk’s favor as over 57% of users voted against him.
Days later, he finally admitted he had lost the election and claimed he would recognize the results, but gave no timeline for when he would keep his word.
Last week, Twitter announced that on April 1st they will “begin phasing out our legacy verified program and removing legacy verified ticks.” They invited users with blue ticks to subscribe to Twitter Blue to keep their badge or they would lose it.
