Cannes Critics’ Week Unveils 2023 Poster Honoring Breakout 2022 ‘Aftersun’

One of the first signs that the Cannes Film Festival is approaching is the unveiling of the poster for the Official Selection, as well as the main parallel segments of the Cannes Critics’ Week (Semaine de la Critique) and the Directors’ Fortnight.

Cannes Critics’ Week makes its debut this year with a poster celebrating Charlotte Wells’ award-winning debut feature After sun.

The drama won the section’s French Touch prize in 2022 and has since enjoyed a lavish, award-winning run on the international festival circuit.

Co-star Paul Mescal was subsequently nominated for an Academy Award for his performance, while Wells won the Bafta for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.

Mescal starred alongside newcomer Frankie Corio as a single father who takes his young daughter on holiday to a Turkish resort in the 1990s. The poster features an image by Sarah Makharine, the production’s still photographer, of the characters in an embrace.

Wells said she was indebted to Cannes Critics’ Week artistic director Ava Cahen and the rest of the selection team for choosing the film last year.

“While After sunSemaine’s reception can easily take last year’s selection for granted, but the truth is that the Semaine programming team took a big risk with our film,” said the filmmaker.

“Looking at this year’s poster, at the photo of Paul and Frankie taken by our photographer and collaborator Sarah Makharine, I am very proud – proud of how we felt at the Miramar Theater when the end credits rolled on April 21 has. ran at 1:00 p.m. a remarkable year; proud to have the opportunity to premiere my first feature film in the selection of La Semaine de la Critique.”

The 62nd edition of Cannes Critics’ Week, which focuses on first and second works, takes place this year from 17 to 25 May.

Speculation continues to build in the background as to what caused the cut for both the official grid and the parallel segments.

The Cannes Film Festival has yet to confirm the date of its traditional press conference in Paris to announce the lineup, but it is expected to take place on April 13 or 20. The selections for the parallel sections will follow a few days later.
