Designer Jeremy Scott leaves Moschino after 10 years of exaggerated fashion

The 47-year-old American designer has just announced his departure from the Italian fashion house Moschino, of which he has been artistic director since October 2013. These are ten years of creativity full of references to popular culture and humour. The end of an era?

In the fashion industry, love often lasts three years between a luxury house and the person chosen to ensure its artistic direction. That’s why the longevity of the contract between the exuberant Jeremy Scott and Moschino seemed exceptional. After 10 years of well-cut eccentricities, the 47-year-old American designer has just announced he’s leaving the Italian luxury house.

It was Franco Moschino who founded it in 1983, deploying from the outset a fashion full of amusing irony. And for this Jeremy Scott succeeded him fluently in 2013as he too was known for his style full of irreverence and references to popular culture.

For his first runway show at the head of the house (held since 1999 by the Aeffe group), Jeremy Scott had thus reinvented the imagery and uniforms of McDonald’s fast food restaurants to make it a parody of fashion that questions the acceleration of the pace of industry and society of hyperconsumption.

During the pandemic, when fashion can no longer offer the classic physical shows, Jeremy Scott proposes for his collection a miniaturized presentation of small string puppet dolls (or puppets for friends) Moschino spring-summer 2021. The craftsmanship appears even more dazzling, as well as being adorable, fun and surprising.

For one of his last shows at the helm of Moschino, when inflation is on everyone’s lips in September 2022, Jeremy Scott presents a collection spring-summer 2023 inflated as the soaring prices of common consumer goods. It is once again a master class of technical know-how in the service of humor and vice versa.

Moschino Fall/Winter 2023-2024 show “No Future” by Jeremy Scott

For his latest fashion show at Moschino presented in Milan on 23 February 2023, Jeremy Scott presented an autumn-winter 2023-2024 collection that was almost dark compared to his habits. Who could have imagined her announcing the end of her reign at the head of the Italian house? He who had accustomed the general public to very colorful, popular, even regressive references, this time was inspired by Salvador Dali’s dripping watches (also a tribute to Paco Rabanne’s last fashion show, by the way) in his painting The persistence of memory. During the first part of the presentation, the rigor of the skirt suit of the archetypal bourgeois wardrobe thus seemed to flow at the level of the hems and patterns. A second part seemed more punk, like a tribute to perhaps recently deceased Vivienne Westwood, but also in continuity with a form of social criticism: it’s urgent to slow down (the cult song about delayed ejaculation” Relax by Frankie Goes to Hollywood in a slowed down version served as a soundtrack), otherwise fashion has no future. ” Without future as the punk saying goes. But does that also apply to the aftermath of Jeremy Scott’s career?
