Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen shares health update after violent assault

Def Leppard drummer Rick Allen is speaking out for the first time following a violent attack on March 13 in South Florida.

“Thank you to everyone for the overwhelming support. Your love and prayers really help. My wife Laurent [Monroe] Luckily was not with me at the time of the incident. We are now together and working to recover in a safe space,” Allen said in a statement to ABC News.

The statement continued: “We ask that you join us in our efforts to move from confusion and shock to compassion and empathy. We understand that this act of violence can be a trigger for so many people. To all supporters, veterans and first responders in our global community, we are thinking of you all. Together with love we will get through all these difficult times.”

Allen was reportedly attacked by Max Edward Hartley outside the Four Seasons Hotel in Fort Lauderdale Beach, FL last week, a day after Def Leppard performed in the area. According to a Fort Lauderdale police report, Allen, 59, was smoking a cigarette outside the hotel when Hartley, who was hiding behind a pole, attacked Allen “full throttle” and threw him backwards to the ground. . Allen hit his head on the pavement during the fall.

It seems that the teenager and the musician did not know each other before. Hartley, 19, an Ohio resident who was reportedly visiting the Sunshine State for spring break, was arrested and charged with two counts of battery, four counts of criminal mischief and assault on an elderly or disabled adult.

Allen lost his arm in a car accident in 1984. He then taught himself to play drums using only his right arm and both feet with a custom made kit.
