HOLY MARY
Section: Narrative Spotlight
Manager: Rosemary Rodriguez
Screenwriter: Knate Lee
Registration: Holy Mary is a genre-bending retelling of the story of Mary and Joseph that begs the question: who are the real monsters? Maria, a 17-year-old girl from Belize, mysteriously becomes pregnant. We find her following the North Star to make her way to safety across the US-Mexico border. She escapes a deadly virus and is pursued by the devil’s right hand: BAAL. She meets Jose, a mediocre carpenter who helped build a tunnel under the Rio Grande. They team up with Gabrielle (the angel Gabriel) and take on Baal, the cartels and the US Border Patrol. This subversive monster film may find unexpected fans cheering for an undocumented migrant to cross the border safely.
Commercial agent: CAA
Panelists: Natalia del Riego, Benny Emmanuel, Angela Sarafyan and Rosemary Rodriguez
Premiere: March 13, 2023
Key Quotes: del Riego: “Maria is someone who sees herself as average – it makes me emotional because I was there. The story moves from “I don’t know what I’m capable of” to “Wait, I can change the world”. That’s what I love about Hail Marys and I can’t wait for everyone to see it.”
Sarafyan: “That’s why I wanted to do the film, because I think the idea that we judge people by their status is the opposite here. It’s the things you can’t see, a person’s values, integrity, strength and heart – you can be homeless and have nothing, and you can change the world. I think the message of this film is very beautiful.”
Deadline Studio at SXSW takes place March 10-13, where the cast and creatives behind the best and most popular titles from this year’s cast meet with the festival team at Deadline to discuss their films and the paths they took to come to Austin, Texas. .
