With abortion now banned in 13 states and restricted in 12 others, scientists estimate these territories have fewer clinics that could ensure good follow-up of pregnancies, whether they are intended or not, according to the Commonwealth Fund report.

This phenomenon should be particularly evident in Florida, where Republican lawmakers have enacted a series of anti-abortion laws, including a ban on the procedure after 15 weeks of gestation. In this state, 1 in 6 women do not have health insurance. This reduces her access to prenatal care and makes it more difficult to start a healthy pregnancy.
Additionally, the report analyzes that women are twice as likely to die of pregnancy- and childbirth-related causes in Florida than in California, where abortions are still legal.
In 2021, about 1 in 10 babies were born prematurely in the US, or before 37 weeks gestation, according to a March of Dimes report released in late 2022. 7.4% in the UK, 6% in France and 5, 8% in Sweden.
