UTA signs Cecillia Aldarondo, filmmaker behind SXSW premiere of documentary You Were My First Boyfriend

EXCLUSIVE: UTA has signed director and producer Cecilia Aldarondo, her third feature you were my first boyfriendappeared in the Documentary Competition at the SXSW Film Festival on Friday.

Written and directed by Aldarondo and Sarah Enid Hagey, the hybrid documentary is on SXSW’s official schedule as an exploration of “the power of adolescent imagination, the subtle violence of cultural assimilation and the hilarious mirror of the passage of time. Aldarondo also produced the pic, which heads to HBO later this year, where she revisits her youth in the 1990s, a generation after she thought she had left it all behind.

Aldarondo previously directed and produced the documentaries Memories of a broken heart And landingboth are co-produced by the award-winning PBS series, pov.

The title’s earlier world premiere in Tribeca continues 25 years after Miguel’s death from AIDS, as his niece opens a Pandora’s box of unresolved family drama by tracking down his estranged lover. The latter, which also screens at Tribeca and examines the strained relationship between the US and Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria, won the DOC NYC Jury Grand Prize and Aldarondo nominations at the Cinema Eye Honors Awards and the Independent Spirit Awards earned.

Aldarondo’s previous awards include a Guggenheim Fellowship and an IDA Emerging Filmmaker Award, a former Women at Sundance Fellow included in DOC NYC’s 40 Under 40 list. As she continues to build her career behind the camera, she teaches filmmaking at Williams College in Williamstown, MA.
