NBCU Academy and NBC News Studios will host an open call for short documentary presentations on projects that highlight underrepresented communities.
The program – in collaboration with IF/Then Shorts – is part of the film show Original Voices, which started in 2021.
After the open call, five teams will be selected to receive a $6,000 scholarship and travel to New York City this fall. They will then take the stage at DOC NYC to present their projects to a live panel of journalists, financiers, news executives and distributors. A winning team will receive a $100,000 investment in their project and a commission deal with NBC News Studios, NBC News’ documentary division. You’ll also have access to NBCU News Group archives and production resources, as well as executives and journalists.
Applications for the program – the Original VoicesShorts Pitch – are possible until April 14, 2023. Eligible are American filmmakers 18 years or older who identify as female, LGBTQ+ Folkx, communities of color and people with disabilities. or those filmmakers who highlight social issues affecting these communities. The Original Voices Award and Artist Development Program has so far screened four films including I didn’t see you therewhich won the 2022 Sundance Award for Best Director; mijawho was also at Sundance last year; bad press, which won the Special Jury Prize for Freedom of Speech at Sundance earlier this year; And hummingbirdawarded at the Berlinale 2023 with Grand Prix, Generation 14plus.
