Russian scientists and ecologists conduct a seal count

Scientists and ecologists conduct aerial ice counts of seals on the waters of the Russian part of the Caspian Sea. It will run until mid-March. This period is the most favorable because almost all pinnipeds come on the ice to breed.

According to TASS, the reconnaissance team included Natalya Dmitrieva, the only female pilot to fly amphibious aircraft in Russia. It is a ship that can land and take off not only on land but also in water. A video recorder is installed on board.

According to the agency, winter accounting is organized within the framework of the Spirit of the Caspian project. This is a program for conducting extensive research on the Caspian seal from the moment it entered the Red Book of Russia. In 2021, scientists managed to find a single rookie of 500 pinnipeds. Most of them were on the island of Maly Zhemchuzhny.
