EXCLUSIVE: The British Film Institute is about to hire a new festival director and an announcement is expected soon, according to Deadline.
The new nominee succeeds Tricia Tuttle, who announced her retirement on the eve of last year’s London Film Festival.
The role of festival director was listed by the BFI late last year as having an annual salary of £85,000 ($102,000). The prestigious role includes leading the BFI’s flagship London Film Festival, as well as the LGBTQIA-focused festival BFI Flare, which runs this month from 15-26 March.
“We are looking for candidates who have extensive senior management experience in running a festival, developing the program and managing key stakeholders,” the application states.
The deadline for applications was January 16. Two rounds of talks were held, the last on 8 February. .
Tuttle served five years, having been deputy festival director from 2013 to 2017. Since then she has served at the National Film and Television School as deputy director of the school’s directing course.
Tuttle’s role at the NFTS will be part-time until she completes her post-BFI Flare duties at the BFI, at which point she will attend the film school full-time. Her role currently runs until September.
The London Film Festival’s profile as a global showcase has grown in recent years as numerous award-winning films and studio awards move to the capital.
We understand that at one point in the recruitment process the BFI was keen to impress with an international name, but from speaking to a handful of the purported candidates we also know that the advertised salary is a sticking point for some wash. The successful candidate for the post must be announced in advance.
