March 4, 1965 opened a whole new page in the history of the fashion industry. 58 years ago today, British designer Mary Quant introduced the revolutionary short skirts that would later open an era, first to London and then to the whole world. The inspiration for such a provocative invention were images of tap dancers whose uniforms were tight tights and short trapezoid dresses.
The first models, codenamed “mini”, debuted at the Bazaar store on Kings Road and … sold out in a record 10 days. At that moment it became clear that the youth of London were ready for a revolution against the primitive and conservative older generation.
Years later, Mary Quant herself recalled that the windows of the store were constantly swaying from the blows and shouts were heard from outside: “Immoral! Disgusting!” However, the fashion trend had many (or even dozens of times) more followers, so dangerous minis fit very quickly into the rocking 1960s. Moreover, they became the personification of the decade. By the way, skirts so short It is worth noting that Mary Quant had to sew matching panties to her underwear so that it would not attract attention.
