It is no longer to be proven that painful periods can be a hindrance for many women. Pain, vomiting, extreme tiredness, fainting, migraine… These symptoms that weigh on their mental health would have cost them several days of social life every year, according to a study conducted by the British laboratory Jooi, specialized in menstrual care, and transmitted by the magazine Charm of the UK. More precisely, women are said to miss an average of up to 36 days of social events, education, exercise and work per year.
Women with endometriosis lose 60 days of social life each year in the UK
According to this study published in February 2023, this phenomenon increases for people suffering from endometriosis. In the UK, the study identifies them losing 60 days a year, and in Ireland this amounts to 84 days a year.
Among the interviewees, 35% believe they have already been forced to cancel an appointment because their period is too painful; 34% were ordered to cancel a professional assignment; while 28% of them had to cancel a personal trip. Furthermore, 45% of those interviewed revealed that they were forced to suspend physical and sporting activity during the menstrual cycle due to too much pain.
” All women with painful periods deserve better care. Especially in accessing tools that help them better understand their bodies. A better understanding of menstrual health is also needed “, explains Justyna Strzeszynska, founder of Joii.
