Californians in 44 counties who owe taxes to the federal or state government are receiving good news: The deadline for filing tax returns has been pushed back to October.
The extended deadline is available to everyone living in the 44 counties that were part of the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s state of emergency declaration. The reason was severe winter storms between December 27 and January 31.
The traditional April date has already been postponed to May 15. But now the IRS has kicked the can down the road further, and California Governor Gavin Newsom said today that the state will also delay filing until October.
The deadline is automatic without you having to tell any agency that you are applying in October.
The new October deadline also extends contributions to an IRA or health savings account.
Those who owe a refund can apply before October if they wish.
