This year’s most nominated production is My neighbor Totoro, the stage adaptation of the 1988 Studio Ghibli cult animated film. The production received a total of nine nominations, including Best Entertainment or Comedy Play, Best Director, Best Theater Choreographer, Best Original Score, and a Best Actress nomination for Mei Mac. Joe Hisaishi, composer for the Royal Shakespeare Company and Studio Ghibli, performed the play.
Production of the National Theatre Standing on the edge of heaven is running with eight nominations, the most for a musical. The production takes place in Sheffield, England and started in 2019.
Claire Walker and Hannah Essex, co-chief executive of the Society of London Theater and executive producers of the Olivier Awards, announced the nominations: “Congratulations to all the nominees for the 2023 Olivier Awards with Mastercard. It’s amazing to to see diverse.” people for their outstanding contributions to the industry.
Walker and Essex added: “We have no doubt that this year’s event will be the ultimate celebration of theater and we look forward to a stunning show and exciting atmosphere at the Royal Albert Hall on Sunday 2 April.”
