British television history will be made tonight as a 29-channel appeal for donations to the Turkey-Syria earthquake is broadcast on 29 channels, narrated by Daniel Craig.
Channel 4 has media owners ITV, UKTV, Channel 5, Sky, STV, Warner Bros. Discovery and Ocean Outdoor joined forces for the call, which runs for 90 seconds at 21:55 GMT (13:55 PST) and is also on big screens in London, Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester.
Told by the James Bond star, the special call is a shortened, updated version of an original film produced by Channel 4 News outfit ITN and shown on February 9 at Turkey’s Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) on Channel 4, Channel 5, ITV and Sky News – Appeal for the earthquake in Syria.
Produced for free by Recipe, the ad features footage of the devastation, highlights the ever-increasing death toll and shows viewers how they can donate to help with the relief effort.
“Given the devastation caused by the earthquake, we wanted to harness the power of a joint broadcast and advertising initiative to raise awareness of this important cause,” said Channel 4 Chief Revenue Officer Verica Djurdjevic.
The latest estimates put the death toll in the February 6 disaster at more than 50,000, exacerbated by another powerful earthquake on the Turkish-Syrian border earlier this week. Aid agencies around the world launched massive appeals to raise money and help the thousands and thousands of people left homeless by the disaster.
