Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA) has officially entered the US Senate race to succeed Dianne Feinstein, who is not seeking another term.
Lee joins a Democratic field with two colleagues, Adam Schiff and Katie Porter.
“I have never shied away from what is right,” Lee said in her announcement. “And I never will. Californians deserve a strong, forward-thinking leader who drives real change.”
In her campaign video, Lee recalled growing up racially segregated, having an abortion “in an alley when they were all illegal, and becoming a homeless single mother.” “They didn’t want to hear my voice or anyone who wasn’t like them, but by the grace of God I didn’t let that stop me,” Lee said in the video.
Lee was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1998 and was the subject of a 2021 documentary. Barbara Lee: Speak truth to power.
Her campaign video also highlights that she was the only voice to speak out against the use of force in Afghanistan in 2001. She also noted that the Senate has no black female members. If elected, she would be only the third in American history. Lee is also co-chair of the House Democratic Steering Committee and former chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.
Feinstein, 89, leaves the Senate as the oldest member and longest-serving Democrat. In 1992 she was elected for the first time.
Today I am proud to announce my candidacy for the United States Senate. I have never been afraid to do the right thing. And I never will. Californians deserve a strong, forward-thinking leader who has made real change.#BarbaraLeeSpeakForMe pic.twitter.com/sEjmABg2BS
