Don Lemon returns to CNN This Morning on Wednesday after responding to comments he made last week about when women are at their “best.”
CNN Worldwide chairman and CEO Chris Licht wrote in a memo to employees late Monday: “I sat down with Don and had a frank and meaningful conversation. He agreed to attend formal training, but also to keep listening and learning. We take this situation very seriously.”
Licht added, “It’s important to me that CNN balances responsibility with fostering a culture where people admit their mistakes, learn from them, and grow from them. To that end, Don will return CNN this morning On Wednesday.”
Lemon hasn’t been on the show since Thursday, when he spoke with co-hosts Poppy Harlow and Kaitlan Collins about Nikki Haley’s presidential bid and her suggestion that candidates take 75+ competency tests.
Lemon said that “this age talk makes me uncomfortable,” but added, “Nikki Haley is not in her prime. Sorry if a woman is considered in her prime, she’s in her 20s and 30s and maybe in her 40s. “
Harlow then stopped him.
“Wait,” Harlow said. “Good for what?”
“It depends. It’s like prime if you look it up. If you google ‘when is a woman in her prime’ it says ’20s, 30s and 40s’.”
Lemon later posted a tweet Thursday saying he regretted the comments and apologized to the staff in an editorial call Friday. “I’m sorry I said that. And I certainly understand why people thought it was completely wrong,” Lemon said.
Lemon was not on Friday’s show due to a pre-scheduled time off. But he wasn’t on the show Monday, as Sara Sidner filled in for him.
His comments were condemned by Haley and others on the right and left. The New York Post put Lemon on its front page Friday, skipping the day’s other big media story: the revelations of dozens of internal Fox News text messages in Dominion Voting Systems’ defamation suit against the network.
Lemon, Collins and Harlow debuted as co-hosts on the revived CNN morning show in November.
