Chelsea Handler posted a Daily show-branded video sketch this week, in which she bragged about all the time and freedom she had as a childless woman.
If the video, which has more than 10 million views on Twitter, was intended to fuel commentary on the right-wing Kulturkampf, it had the desired effect. Fox News’ Tucker Carlson chimed in with a segment that called her an “aging, highly unlikely woman who never had children” and interviewed guest Jesse Kelly, who said Handler’s “womb looks like a desiccated amulet that … skips an old western town’, whose Valentine’s Day for the 10th year in a row is a 10-year-old copy of Magic Mike and a half-full bottle of Xanax, and you’re trying to pretend you is happy, but you’re not happy. And it’s not really her fault. She’s been lied to by a country that’s lost its way.”
In response, Handler released a video on Wednesday saying, “Why would I even need my own kids when I hear these crying babies all the time?”
In response to Kelly’s comment about taking “half a bottle of Xanax,” Handler joked, “I’ll take a lot more than that, dumb goose.”
She then took a political tone to Carlson: “You guys seem so turned on by me. Gosh, Tucker, I think it’s time you asked yourself a serious question. Are you really mad at how much freedom I have? Or are you mad that you couldn’t take it from me yet?
She also attacked another right-wing critic, Ben Shapiro, before accusing Carlson of “hate masturbation for me”.
Handler was one of the innkeepers of The daily show While searching for a permanent successor to Trevor Noah and her latest back-and-forth, which is getting a lot of attention on social media, Late-Night Catnip is on the left and Talk Moderator is on the right. It gives a glimpse of how Handler would take advantage of what is known as the anger management complex when she introduced herself as the only female late-night host. In a recent appearance on CBS in the morningHandler didn’t come out to say she was looking for the job permanently, but it was pretty clear she was up for it.
In response to Handler’s latest video, Kelly wrote on Twitter: “I actually thought it was pretty funny. For a woman.”
Meanwhile, Handler has signed up for another appearance that will touch on politics and culture: a March 10 speech on South by Southwest with Jen Psaki, the former White House press secretary turned MSNBC commentator and new one this year start.
