A list of the top ten cheeses in the world has landed the French in trouble after none of their offerings made the cut.

Earlier this week, Bulgaria-based global food website Taste Atlas claimed that Italy is home to eight of the most popular cheeses, according to its ratings database.

Parmesan took first place, with the site highlighting how its flavors can range from “nutty to robust and slightly sharp” depending on how long it’s aged.

Two other Italian variants achieved with burrata in second place, followed by the hard cheese Grana Padano.

The only two cheeses from other countries to make the list were Portugal’s Serra da Estrela and Poland’s Bundz, which finished 7th and 9th respectively. Both are made from sheep’s milk.

Taste Atlas then shared an extensive top 100 list – with Reblochon, the first French cheese, coming in at number 13.

Comté – a semi-hard cheese originally from Eastern France – then finished in 14th place. Camembert, on the other hand, ranked 88th out of 100.

However, the UK and US fared much worse in the rankings – none of the country’s cheeses made the top 100 on the website.

Unsurprisingly, the divisive list sparked outrage on social media – prompting French news channel BFMTV to join the debate.

The hosts said the results were a “crushing blow to French gastronomy,” before adding: “The judges should have been Italian.”

Twitter users also argued that French cheese should have done much better.

An angry: “I have a completely different opinion. Reblochon, the first French cheese? The person who made this list knows nothing about French cheeses.”

Another user wrote: “Extremely stupid list I would say.”

Cheesemaker Yves Jourquin told the Telegraph that the results of the Taste Atlas accurately reflect the popularity of Italian cheeses around the world.

He explained: “The statement makes sense because Parmesan remains one of the most distinctive cheeses and can be found on all tables in France, whereas I’m not sure you’ll find French cheeses on Italian tables.”

In addition, Clément Brossault, who works at Paris’s Fromagerie Goncourt, said the French cheese industry is less dependent on exports because residents eat so much of their country’s own cheese.

He said: “We export 4,000 tonnes of Comté compared to 40,000 tonnes of Parmesan.”

Last year, the Taste Atlas caused a stir when it ranked the United States ahead of France in a ranking of the best cuisines in the world.

In response to thousands of complaints, the site explained how they compiled the rankings.

A representative said: “All year people rate these foods (not the kitchens).

“At the end of the year, we take the average of the top-rated dishes in each cuisine (so, for example, France is not plagued by frogs). And that’s it.’
