A Bolivian convict tried to escape from a maximum security prison by disguising himself as a sheep and crawling through grasslands.

José Luis Callisaya Diaz – serving a 15-year sentence for murder in Chonchocoro prison in La Paz, Bolivia – wrapped himself in sheep’s clothing to walk free.

Nicknamed “El Araña” (the spider), Diaz is said to have slipped past security at Chonchocoro prison in the middle of the night by crawling through the grass.

He then attempted to break through one of the facility’s walls to escape his captivity.

The true wolf in sheep’s clothing tried to escape earlier this month, but new footage has now emerged after it was recaptured by prison guards.

The guards soon noticed that the sophisticated criminal was not in his cell, and the authorities rushed to take him to prison.

Guards found him in the act on his hands and knees across the lawn and he was quickly returned to his cell.

In a bizarre series of photos, Diaz can be seen in the sheepskin jacket and dark trousers posing as a farm animal and dragging himself through the grass.

The escape artist thought he could take advantage of the cold weather to evade the punch.

Juan Carlos Limpias, the director of prisons across Bolivia, assured the country that the failed escape artist was back in custody.

He said: “We inform the Bolivian people that prison guards from the San Pedro de Chonchocoro prison center prevented the escape of prisoner José Luis Callisaya Diaz (also known as El Araña), who took advantage of the bad weather to escape through one of the walls of the perimeter of the prison.’
