Duangphet Phromthep dies: One of 13 survivors of flooded Thai cave was 17

Duangphet Phromthep, the captain of the Wild Boars youth football team who was trapped in and rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand’s Chiang Rai province in 2018, died in a British hospital on Sunday. he was 17

His death was announced by both British and Thai officials, with Leicestershire Police telling CNN that Phromthep had been taken to hospital after an accident, a report by the Northern Regional Branch of the UK’s public relations department of the Thai government has been released, has been confirmed. Details of the accident have not been released.

Phromthep, known to friends as Dom, attended a football academy in Leicestershire, England. He was one of 12 boys rescued from a flooded Thai cave with their adult assistant coach after a three-week rescue operation in the summer of 2018. Prajak Sutham, one of Phromthep’s former teammates and cave survivors, posted a tribute to his friend on Facebook, which translates to: “We’ve been through a lot together, good times and bad times. We have been through life and death situations together when you told me to wait until you become a national team player. I always believed you could. When we last met, before you left for the UK, I jokingly told you that I would ask for your autograph when you returned. Rest in peace brother, we always have each other, the 13 of us.”

Sutham later wrote, “I’ve been waiting all day hoping for a miracle, but there is no miracle… rest in peace brother.” We will meet again in the next life. You will stay in my heart forever.”

Phromthep attended Brooke House College on a football scholarship from the Thai non-profit Zico Foundation. In a statement, the college said Phromthep’s death “has left our college community deeply saddened and shocked.”
