“Thanks Leo!”: Leonardo DiCaprio in Bolsonaro Beef Over Rainforest ahead of the Brazilian elections

Leonardo DiCaprio and Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro have been embroiled in a social media war ever since the Oscar winner used the platform to vote for South American youth in upcoming elections.

On Thursday, the Oscar-winning ecological champion tweeted:

“Brazil is home to the Amazon and other ecosystems critical to climate change. What is happening there is important to all of us and voting for young people is the key to making a difference for a healthy planet.

Bolsonaro, who has sparked international controversy with his policies, including reducing the environmental protection of the Amazon rainforest, responded sarcastically:

“Thanks for your support Leo! It is very important that all Brazilians vote in the next elections. Our people will decide whether they want to keep our sovereignty over the Amazon if they are served by scammers serving foreign special interests.

It is not the first time that the couple has clashed. When DiCaprio donated $ 5 million to conservation efforts in 2019, the Brazilian president accused him and other NGOs of “burning money in the Amazon.”

In 2021 DiCaprio and other leading figures called on President Biden not to sign an environmental agreement with Brazil, which would endanger the Amazon.

Bolsonaro argues that his government should use the region’s tropical forest development opportunities to help reduce poverty.
