James Flynn, co-producer of The Banshees Of Inisherin, has died aged 57.
The filmmaker died on Saturday morning and remained “brave, dignified and positive” until the end, friends confirmed.
A cause of death is not yet known.
His death was revealed by The Irish Times and comes after the dark comedy starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson earned nine Oscar nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards.
The co-founder of Metropolitan Film Productions is survived by his wife Juanita Wilson and children Alex and Anna.
His colleague Ed Guiney, who worked with him on the 1998 film Sweety Barrett, paid him a moving tribute.

He told the outlet, “James was a wonderful person, a brilliant producer – he had an encyclopedic knowledge of film and was the smartest of my generation of producers.
“He has made tremendous contributions to the industry on the film board, as a member of Screen Producers Ireland and as a producer.”
In a statement, Metropolitan Films said: “All of us at Metropolitan Films are deeply saddened by the passing of our valued founder, colleague and close friend James Flynn, who passed away peacefully on Saturday morning with his wife Juanita Wilson and children Alex and Anna … his side.
No words can describe the immense contribution James has made to the Irish film and television industry, both nationally and internationally, over three decades.
“He was willing and generous to offer his advice and guidance to all who sought his advice, from young aspiring filmmakers to established Irish and international practitioners in the industry.
James fought his recent illness with courage, dignity and determination until the end. As such, we are aware that the news of his death has come as an unexpected shock to us all.”

His recent work includes Sir Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, the sequel to Disenchanted and Greta, starring Isabelle Huppert.
Away from the big screen, he was also executive producer of the television series Vikings and its spin-off Valhalla.
He was known to collaborate with other Irish stars, collaborating with Farrell and Gleeson on several productions.
In 1997 he founded Metropolitan Film Productions with his wife Juanita.
In 2002 he launched Octagon Films, including Neil Jordan’s Ondine and the Irish comedy Rory O’Shea Was Here, starring James McAvoy and Steven Robertson.
Flynn received Oscar nominations for his short film The Door (2008) and the animated film The Secret of Kells (2009).

The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced on January 24 by Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams, with several nominations for Martin McDonagh’s The Banshees Of Inisherin, including Best Actor for Farrell.
The nomination continues Farrell’s successful awards season, having also been nominated for Critics Choice, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe Awards.
The Irish star stars alongside longtime friend and colleague Gleeson in the dark comedy, set on a remote island off the coast of Ireland.
Gleeson was nominated for Best Supporting Actor alongside Barry Keoghan for The Banshees Of Inisherin.
Kerry Condon also received an award for her performance in the film, which was nominated in the Best Director category for McDonagh and Best Picture overall.
