Joe Biden plans to attend at least part of the White House Correspondents Association dinner on Saturday night and return to the event’s centennial tradition of presidential struggles.
Biden is expected to arrive at 9pm ET / 6pm. It includes material from the President himself, as well as material from this year’s singer, Trevor Noah.
As Vice President, Biden starred in comedy videos with Julia Lewis-Dreyfus, but otherwise left to attend a dinner with Barack Obama, whose material has often been received so well that it overshadows the featured comedian. Biden will be the first president to speak at the dinner since Barack Obama in 2016, as Donald Trump missed events during his tenure.
White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said Biden consulted with comedians about the material but did not name them. “I’ll tell you that the president has a great sense of humor and works hard on his speech,” she said.
On Friday, Psaki laughed at reporters: “I’ll lower my expectations and say it’s not funny at all. “Just kidding.”
Vinay Reddy, author of the Biden report, and senior adviser Mike Donilon helped the president prepare his speeches.
Dinner itself usually carries a sometimes surreal mix of celebrity and politics, which was evident during the rush of pre-dinner parties and receptions.
At an UTA party in Fiola Mare on Friday evening, Pat Sajaki was with the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mallorca. On Saturday afternoon, at the annual Georgetown Garden Branch hosted by co-host Tammy Haddad, actor Harry Hamlin spoke to Dr. Anthony Fauch.
Fuchsia won’t be at the dinner itself, having ditched plans earlier this month after the launch of the Gridiron Club’s annual dinner. Unlike the dinner, where more than 2,000 people gather at the Washington Hilton Cave Ballroom, brunch was for mostly outdoors.
There is also a significant contingent of media executives attending the events this weekend, including NBCUniversal’s Jeff Shelley and CBS Entertainment’s George Chicks, along with news executives and future CNN president and CEO Chris Licht. CAA Brian Lorde was among those attending the agency reception on Friday at the Viceroy Hotel.
Very few participants wear masks, reflecting the feeling that it was time to get out of the pandemic, even with the spread of the contagious variant. Psaki said Biden probably wore a mask when she wasn’t talking, but she decided to leave because “going to dinner was important for him to work as a journalist.”
The scene at the Washington Hilton is supposed to be the special love of Beltway insiders, media personalities and Hollywood celebrities. Among the expected are Kim Kardashian and Pete Davidson, guests of ABC News.
