Channel 4 has earned the right to broadcast England’s upcoming football matches.
The UK broadcaster has signed an agreement to host England’s UEFA Nations League matches, European Championship qualifiers and several high-profile friendlies.
Previously, these games would have been released via Sky Sports pay television. This marks a major blow to the publicly owned Free-to-Air Channel 4, which was shocked this month by news that the government would sell it to private individuals.
The deal includes 20 matches through 2024, with friendly matches between Germany and Europe champion Italy this year. In the Nations League group, England will face Italy.
“This deal shows that Channel 4 can compete with some of the biggest sports properties and bring a significant new audience to our list of original programming award winners,” said Ian Kats, director of content for Channel 4.
The news was released the same week when it was revealed that European streaming service Viaplay had withdrawn UK rights exclusively to games in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland since 2024, prior to their launch in the country.
