The final Happy Valley achieves 7.5 million for the BBC;  Star Sarah Lancashire forms Indie with husband Peter Salmon

BBC One’s BAFTA-winning crime drama final happy valley attracted 7.5 million viewers in the UK last night.

That’s what the audience ratings, which come from Barb data from übernachtungen.tv, do happy valley the highest rated show of 2023 to date and one of the biggest in recent BBC drama history. The figures correspond to a share of almost 42%.

The six-part series began last month and aired on the coveted BBC One slot at 9pm mandatory line previously inhabited. The latest figures will continue to rise as on-demand viewing takes hold in the coming weeks.

The third and final season came to an end as Sarah Lancashire police sergeant Catherine Cawood’s cat-and-mouse game with psychopathic rapist Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton) came to an end.

The third season came seven years after the end of the previous run. The series’ popularity in the United Kingdom led to a large attendance in Hebden Bridge, the northern English town where the show takes place. It gained international popularity after it was streamed on Netflix.

Drama house Lookout Point, part of BBC Studios, is making the show, with creator and writer Sally Wainwright and Lancashire serving as executive producers.

happy valley marks the end of the beginning of a new business for Lancashire who has teamed up with her husband and former BBC and Banijay UK boss Peter Salmon to form Via Pictures.

Details from the UK Companies House directory show the two are directors of the new Manchester-based manufacturing company. The company started quietly in January.

Lancashire credits include Coronation Street, watch off, Last Tango in Halifax, kiri And Julia. Zalm was most recently Executive Chairman of Banijay UK and Chief Content Officer of Endemol Shine Group before taking over Banijay. He was also a long-time managing director of BBC Channels and BBC Studios and worked for other influential British production companies such as Television Corporation.
