EXCLUSIVE: Fast-rising filmmakers Travon Free and Martin Roe have signed a representation deal with CAA while also announcing the Paramount Pictures film razor tearsbased on the New York Times bestseller by SA Cosby as her next project.
The picture for her directorial debut in the narrative feature film was produced by Top Gun: Maverickby Jerry Bruckheimer. The story follows Ike and Buddy Lee, two ex-convicts with little in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons, who join forces in their desperate desire for revenge. In their quest to do more for their sons in death than in life, the two hardened men will confront their own prejudices against their sons and each other, while exacting revenge on those who hurt their sons.
Published by Flatiron Books razor blade tears in July 2021. In addition to directing, Free and Roe will rewrite the script based on an original concept by Charm City KingsSherman Payne.
The couple recently wrapped production on Bishop Sycamore’s upcoming football documentary BS high, which will debut on HBO and HBO Max at an undisclosed date. (Free also produced the Oscar-nominated documentary 38 in the yard about NBA pioneer Jeremy Lin, with this film directed by Frank Chi on HBO Max last fall.)
An important moment in Free and Roe’s career came when the short film was acquired by Netflix Two distant strangers, which they wrote and directed – where they talk about racially motivated police brutality in the year George Floyd was killed – won the Academy Award for Best Live Action Short. The duo also recently won a Sports Emmy for writing and directing What Agnes sawa short film about a 100-year-old Olympian that was screened as part of the opening ceremony of last year’s Tokyo Olympics.
Recently sold, Free wrote an untitled spy thriller that was picked up by Apple in a multi-studio bidding war and stars Idris Elba alongside Simon Kinberg as producer. He is also known for his work in television, as a producer and as a supervising producer on series such as Haarlem, Wilmore, Black Monday and Full frontal with Samantha Beewhich earned him an Emmy for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and an Any Given Wednesday, campand last win time for HBO and Adam McKay. Free was previously a permanent writer for The daily showand won an Emmy in 2015 for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series.
Roe directed, produced and co-created the documentaries through his commercial production company, Dirty Robber, of which he is the founder and creative director. Wiz Khalifa: behind the camera for apple, break 2 for National Geographic, We are the winners and rob for Netflix and Tom against time for Facebook, which earned him a Sports Emmy for Outstanding Serialized Sports Documentary, among others.
Free will continue to be represented by AGI Entertainment Media & Management and Jared Levine in Yorn, Levine, Barnes; Roe of 3 Arts and Matthew Levy at Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.
