Sylvia Syms dies: ‘The Queen’ & ‘Victim’ star turns 89

English actress Sylvia Syms has died in the UK at the age of 89, according to her family.

Syms was best known for roles in films including Ice cold Alex, victim, The tamarind seed and Stephen Frears’s The queenin which she played the Queen Mother.

Syms died this morning at Denville Hall, a London care home for people in the entertainment industry. In a statement shared with The sunSyms’ family said: “She lived a wonderful life and gave us joy and laughter right to the end. Just yesterday we were sitting together thinking about all our adventures. She will be missed so much.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at Denville Hall for the truly outstanding care they provided to our mother over the past year.”

Syms was born in London in 1934 and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. In 1958 she landed a role in a BAFTA nominated film Ice cold in Alex. A year later she plays express bongo opposite Cliff Richard and Dirk Bogarde in the controversial 1961 crime drama victim. In the 1970s she was nominated for her role in the BAFTA The tamarind seed with Julie Andrews.

Shortly after British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher left office in 1990, Syms portrayed her Thatcher: The last days (1991), a Granada made-for-TV film for ITV. She later reprized the role on stage.

From 2000 to 2003 she starred in ITV series Home with the Braithwaites and was cast in the UK as the 2006 hit Queen Mother The queenfor which Helen Mirren won an Oscar.

Syms also played a role in the popular British soap opera east as Olive Woodhouse and starred in a short film with Cara Delevingne Timeless. Her last role was in the BBC drama in 2019 mr jack as Mrs. Rawson.
