A British man involved in a “bitter” family dispute over property left to him by his late mother has been shot dead in Jamaica, local media reports.
Michael Brown (48) was shot dead in his bed early Thursday morning while visiting family in Mike Town, Manchester.
According to police reports, Brown was in an unfinished part of a house in the community and was ambushed by armed men around 12:20 on Thursday.
His death brings the number of deaths on the Caribbean island to two this year.
Michael Brown (photo in a photo shared by local Jamaican press), 48, was shot dead early Thursday morning while visiting family in Mike Town, on the outskirts of Mandeville in Manchester.
Brown, also known as “Jimmy,” was in a bedroom of an unfinished house he was building when he suffered gunshot wounds to the torso in the attack. He was taken to Mandeville Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Citing “community sources”, Jamaican radio station Nationwide 90FM said Brown was embroiled in a “bitter” family dispute over various possessions his recently deceased mother left him in her will in the island nation.
The broadcaster reported on Wednesday that the dispute between Brown and his family members escalated and a heated argument ensued.
Police have launched an investigation into the shooting and are collecting statements.
According to local reports, investigators are now looking into whether Brown was killed in connection with the feud.
Speaking to the Jamaica Observer, Brown was lying in bed when he was shot just four days after laying his 74-year-old mother to rest.
Manchester Police Superintendent Shane McCalla told the local newspaper that police had previously intervened in the family dispute, which is believed to have been going on since 2015.

Local TV news showed this photo, allegedly of Mr. Brown. According to police reports, Mr. Brown, also known as “Jimmy”, went to an unfinished part of his community house and was ambushed by armed men at around 12.20pm on Thursday.
‘Until last night [January 18]The police had to intervene in a domestic dispute between them [relatives]. All necessary steps have been taken, individuals have been warned,” McCalla said. She told reporters the dispute involved five houses.
“The dispute dates back to 2015 and it is not just about different properties [in Mike Town]but in other parts of Manchester about five houses in total,” she said.
Police sources said two of Brown’s family members had been arrested, the Observer reported, and that they were persons of interest.
McCalla told the newspaper that the officer interviewed next of kin “for hours”.
Reporters from The Observer visited the home and said they found grieving family members, shedding light on the dispute.
One said Brown’s late mother suffered from the argument, claiming that even she was once attacked and chased out of her home naked.
“This is a despicable crime and we are reviewing all investigations. This man was from England and came over to look after the new house he is building and to visit family,” said a police spokesperson.
“He was a hard-working man in every way. We intend to bring those responsible to justice.” They added: “We will catch those responsible.”
An FCDO spokesman said: “We are in contact with local authorities following the death of a British-Jamaican man in Jamaica,” adding that the State Department had not been asked for consular assistance.
Brown is the second Briton to be shot dead in Jamaica this year after Sean Patterson (33), a personal trainer from Shepherd’s Bush, West London, was found with gunshot wounds to the torso and head in St James’ in early January.

Brown is the second Briton to be shot dead in Jamaica this year after Sean Patterson (pictured), 33, a personal trainer from Shepherd’s Bush, West London, was found with gunshot wounds to the torso and head in St James’ in early January.

Patterson, a personal trainer, was shot dead outside the guest house where he was staying in Jamaica. Witnesses said they heard “explosions”.
Fitz Bailey, deputy commissioner of the Jamaica Constabulary, called it “a hit and run that came from Britain”.
In a video statement, Bailey said Patterson arrived in Jamaica on December 29 with another man, also from London. The couple spent several days in an apartment before moving into the Bogue Hill mansion on New Year’s Day.
Later that day Mr Patterson and the man staying with him met a third person from Kingston and all three stayed in separate rooms at the boarding house.
The next day Mr. Patterson and the Jamaican walked to the villa’s pool deck and a “lone man in a black hoodie” was seen firing shots, Mr. Bailey said.
