Daniel Dae Kim Focuses on the ‘Tragedy’ of the Monterey Park Mass Shooting; Relative of Gold House Sundance Staffer under 10 killed during Lunar New Year celebration

“I’m sure many of you are aware that 10 people were killed and shot last night in Monterey Park during the New Year’s celebrations and another 10 were wounded by a gunman,” said Daniel Dae Kim at the Sundance Film Festival this morning. News has come of the horrors of yet another mass shooting in America.

“We’re here today for our community,” the actor and founder of production company 3AD added to the “tragedy,” as seen here:

Kim’s comments come at 10:15 a.m. MST at the Sunrise Collective location on Park City’s Main Street as law enforcement investigates the carnage at the Star Dance Studio on lantern-lit West Garvey Avenue. The Sunrise Collective is planning a weekend of events and panels for its Sundance debut, including Kim’s 3AD, Gold House and The Asian American Foundation. In response to the shooting, the Filipino filmmakers of Sunrise held a minute’s silence for breakfast on Sunday morning.

A spokesperson for the Gold House previously told Deadline how close the carnage is to home. “One of our employee’s family members is one of the victims, and as the investigation continues, it is impossible not to feel a connection to what our community has been through in recent years,” they said.

“Our condolences go out to the victims and their families,” the Gold House representative continued. “In a time destined for love and celebration, our hearts are heavy, but our conviction is even stronger to uplift and strengthen Asia Pacific and multicultural communities.”

A manhunt is underway for an individual in LA. County Sheriff Robert Luna is described as a “suspicious middle-aged Asian male.” Sheriff Luna continued, “We don’t know if this is specifically a hate crime under the law, but who walks into a dance hall and shoots 20 people.”

After the New Year’s Eve murders in Monterey Park, another incident occurred at the Alhambra in which a man armed with a gun entered a ballroom. According to the LA County Sheriff, “Some people took the gun away from him and this person left.”

Not long after that press conference, a white van was located in Torrance and surrounded by police.
