The Berlin Film Festival announced this morning the titles selected for the official competition, as well as the ‘Competition Encounters’ section in the sidebar. Scroll down for the full series.
18 films were selected for the international competition, with the latest film by Christian Petzold as the highlight red sky (on fire)Directed by Margarethe von Trotta ghost wire Star Vicky Krieps Ingeborg Bachmann – Journey through the desert, and Philippe Garrel returns with a new feature titled The group.
Today, the festival also unveiled a very special show. Actor and filmmaker Sean Penn will direct a documentary with the title super power. The film was shot at the outbreak of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year and follows President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The festival takes place from 16 to 26 February.
The organizers have already announced more than 100 titles in the sidebars of Panorama, Forum, Berlinale Special, Berlinale Series and the youth-oriented generation.
As previously announced, Kristen Stewart will preside over this year’s International Jury and Rebecca Miller’s latest film she came to me, starring Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, Brian d’Arcy James and Anne Hathaway, will open the festival. The film will be screened as a Berlinale Special Gala in the Berlinale Palast.
Other major premieres in Berlin include the latest film by Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv Gouda cheese, with Helen Mirren, Camille Cottin and Liev Schreiber. The film follows the extremely dramatic and important responsibilities and decisions faced by Golda Meir, former Prime Minister of Israel, during the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Mirren plays Meir. Jane Hooks and Michael Kuhn are the producers in the picture. Embankment handles the sale.
Steven Spielberg will be the guest star this year as he travels to Berlin to be honored with the festival’s Honorary Golden Bear for Life. He will also present his latest nominated award, The Fables.
