Everything ingenious is simple: 7 celebs who appear on the red carpet in basic things and don’t fail

The red carpet is serious business. The stars spare no effort, time or money in preparing the image for major music events and movie awards. Take, for example, Kim Kardashian, who had to lose eight pounds last year to wear a Marilyn Monroe dress. Remember the legendary “wet” Mugler dress? It has been under construction for over six months. There are many examples like this. What can’t you do to make history, right?

However, some celebs choose to go the other way and aren’t afraid to show up on the red carpet in ripped jeans (hailing Kanye West at the Met Gala in 2018), white tees and shirts. Today we will tell about these cunning tricks in more detail.

We’ve brought together seven A-list stars who have managed to surprise the discerning fashion community with images featuring essentials.

Stone of Sharon (1998)

In 1998, the Basic Instinct star walked the Oscars red carpet in a lavender Vera Wang satin skirt and Gap’s plain white shirt. This image was truly revolutionary and went down in history. Let’s explain what’s going on. Dress codes used to be stricter than they are now. No guest could afford to come to the event without a suit or evening dress. No guests other than Sharon Stone. Before that, hardly anyone combined the mass market with heavy luxury. Although now many star stylists use this technique.

By the way, the idea for such an image came to the actress in 1996, when the courier accidentally dropped a box with an evening dress by Vera Wang, which was supposed to make Sharon appear on the red carpet. Stone then turned to Basic Instinct costume designer Helen Mirojnick for help. She managed to get out of the situation by choosing an image for the actress in a Valentino skirt, Armani jacket and (again) Gap turtleneck. And so, in 1998 Sharon decided to repeat this trick.

Tilda Swinton (2011)

Although Sharon Stone’s image caused a spate of criticism from the public, many colleagues in the workshop took note of the technique. So, in 2011, the queen of intellectual minimalism, Tilda Swinton, appeared on the Golden Globes red carpet in a pale yellow Jil Sander satin skirt and a classic white shirt. Guaranteed to enter the best-dressed ratings of all genres.

Uma Thurman (2022)

If you think the stars’ interest in white shirts has waned with the release of Tilda Swinton, we’re in a hurry to convince you. On the red carpet of the Oscars last year, we saw two A-list actresses wearing this simple outfit at the same time. Uma Thurman was the first to arrive, opting for a black maxi skirt and a silk Bottega Veneta button-down shirt. Despite the apparent simplicity and the absence of accent accessories, the image never looks boring. We applaud the stylists of Uma Thurman!

Zendaya (2022)

And here is the second picture with the white shirt. “Dune” and “Euphoria” were the stars of Zendaya. Stylist Low Roach suggested that the actress bet on a sequined floor-length silver skirt and a short shirt. Many industry experts immediately noticed in the image that pays homage to Sharon Stone’s aforementioned output.

Irina Shayk

However, it’s not just the shirt! At the end of last year, Irina Shayk proved to the world that a basic T-shirt can easily be part of an evening look. At the Swarovski brand event, the model successfully completed it with a black maxi skirt (yes, the stars have a soft spot for this wardrobe item lately) and matching opera gloves. As they say, simple and enjoyable. By the way, we recently talked about the five rules of Irina Shayk’s style.

Frank Ocean

If you’ve ever heard of the Costume Institute ball, you probably know that the stars aren’t modest when it comes to choosing clothes. Over the past few years, we’ve seen Katy Perry in an elegant chandelier look, Kim Kardashian in her iconic Marilyn Monroe dress, and Cara Delevingne in a banana cap (yes, we were shocked too). However, even at such events, there are guests who prefer plain images. For example, in 2019 (when the theme of the ball was camping) Frank Ocean appeared on the red carpet in a black Prada anorak and … outshined everyone. Surprisingly, but the truth is that this simple image made it hit all the glossy media.

Kanye West

It also featured Kim Kardashian and Kanye West at the Met Gala in 2019. She was wearing a wet Mugler dress with rhinestones and that $40 Dickies jacket, white T-shirt and of course Yeezy. The rapper explained such an unusual choice by not wanting to divert attention from his wife (oh, there were times).
