Greta Thunberg was arrested by police during a demonstration in Germany

Swedish activist Greta Thunberg has been arrested along with other environmental protesters in Germany, as part of actions against the installation of a new lignite mine that will destroy the hamlet of Lützerath.

“Yesterday I was part of a group that demonstrated peacefully against the expansion of a coal mine in Germany. We were caught by the police and then arrested, but were released later that evening. »

Environmental activist Greta Thunberg spoke Wednesday, January 18 on Twitter following the action carried out near the village of Lützerath in Germany, where activists have been mobilizing for several years against the construction of a new open pit lignite mine. This project will cause the total destruction of the village and its homes.

Greta Thunberg and the other activists took part in a sit-in near the entrance to the mine on Tuesday.

Greta Thunberg’s decisive smile

Despite requests by the security forces to leave the scene, the protesters remained until they were forcibly removed. A photo is circulating showing Greta Thunberg being carried by several police officerswith a perfectly serene and determined smile, and certainly aware that this image will be worth a thousand words on the importance of civil disobedience in the fight for the climate.

“Greta Thunberg’s face reminds me of the kids who get dragged out of the McDonald’s ball pit when they lose control. She doesn’t give a shit. »

Earlier in the week, other images from Lützerath’s demonstrations sparked reactions on social networks, showing police officers bogged down in a field of mud in front of protesters.
