Russian artists accused Playboy and Chanel of plagiarism: “If Russia is ‘cancelled’ why are you stealing?

Russian artist Maria Yankovskaya accused French Playboy of plagiarizing her work. A frame almost identical to the picture appeared in the new issue of the magazine – the photo shows the author Frederic Begbeder and the model. The painting was painted long ago — Yankovskaya showed it to her Instagram* followers in 2021.
– wrote Yankovskaya, asking for support from subscribers.

And she did not keep herself waiting – netizens left a lot of angry comments on the account of the French magazine and urged to at least mention Yankovskaya.

The other day, Telegram channels discussed another case of borrowing ideas from Russian artists in the West. Chanel was accused of plagiarism by young artist Maya Golyshkina, believing that the French brand used her idea in a recent video for Mother’s Day. The video featured children dressed in costumes in the form of huge bottles resembling children’s crafts. Golyshkina is sure that Chanel deliberately copied her style.

Golyshkina’s work has already aroused interest among Western brands, but then everything became official – designer Marc Jacobs invited her to collaborate.
It is worth noting that this is also not the first time that Chanel has used the “boyish” style. The brand celebrated Mother’s Day in both 2019 and 2020 in a similar fashion. But back then they were posters, not 3D models. In 2020, children’s drawings also appeared on the cover of Italian Vogue, in which children aged 2 to 10 from all over the world repeated looks from the Chanel Métiers d’Art collection.
Chanel recently sparked outrage among Russian audiences with her refusal to serve Russian citizens in foreign boutiques – brand representatives referred to sanctions against the importation of luxury goods into the country.
