British distribution and distribution company Blue Finch Films has acquired the worldwide rights to Horror Angry Mercymay we reveal.
Produced by BFI Vision award-winning producer Chi Thai, the film will have its world premiere as part of the Narrative Competition section at SXSW 2023. It will be announced by British-born Filipino writer and director Paris Zarcilla.
The film follows Joy, an undocumented Filipino immigrant who struggles to do what is best for her daughter when she lands the perfect job: caring for an extremely rich but incurable old man. The new position is well paid and guarantees a roof over your head. But soon Joy and her daughter Grace realize that all is not as it seems. Something is brewing beneath the surface, threatening everything they’ve worked for.
The picture stars Maxine Eigenmann, who was presented Pronunciation, the Orizzonti entry of Venice. Leanne Best (Tthe woman in black) and David Hayman (The boy in the striped pajamas) also plays alongside newcomer Jaeden Boadilla.
The deal was brokered by Last Conker founder Chi Thai and Fatima Hayward on behalf of Blue Finch Films.
Zarcilla’s short film knob was awarded the Special Jury Prize for Excellence in Directing at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
Zarcilla said: “As a child of the diaspora, for as long as I can remember I have struggled with the idea of being the good immigrant and the bad immigrant. When the pandemic hit, I felt a surge of rebellion that I had to let go – here’s what Angry Mercy has been forged and I hope the message will resonate with audiences around the world. “
Producer Chi Thai said: “It was critical for us to create this personal story so as not to replicate the systems of power that the film criticizes. We worked so hard to maintain a continuity between what we made and how it was made. Bringing this film into the world was an act of catharsis, treated with care and tenderness. We can’t wait to share the film with audiences everywhere.”
Mike Chapman, managing director of Blue Finch, added: “Angry Mercy is a powerful underbelly of a film that retells a familiar story from a fresh and authentic perspective. It’s one of the most confident debuts we’ve seen this year and we’re excited to introduce it to global buyers and festivals.”
Blue Finch’s international slate includes TIFF-selected rom-coms the end of sex, with Emily Hampshire and Blumhouses Soft and quiet.
